Boba, a national treasure of Taiwan, has—for lack of a better word—bubbled over to the rest of the globe. However, the banning of plastic straws in several parts of the world has bubble tea fans feeling guilty over something besides calories.

Mickey Wu and Fang Shih, two industrial designers from Taipei, Taiwan, set out to reimagine the bubble tea cup such that it would no longer require a large straw to suck up tapioca pearls with.

Their answer is ‘FLOAT’, a greener glass drinkware concept with a sipping area and inner cup.

‘FLOAT’s outer material, provided by Spring Pool Glass, is made with recycled, environmentally-friendly glass. The mouth of this intriguing design is protected by a cover, punctuated by a colored sphere that resembles—dare we say—a bubble tea pearl.

A smaller, BPA-free Tritan copolyester cup sits within the glassware, and is designed to to let the drinker reach the beverage’s toppings easily. In addition, Wu and Fang describe that by letting ice cubes swim beneath this compartment, they’ll cool the drink down.

The introduction of an inner cup also makes the glass easier to wash than if sediments were left at its bottom.

Would you drink to this? Check out some pictures illustrating ‘FLOAT’s concept below, and head over here to visualize it in full.
