O'Shea Jackson Jr. Calls Out Hollywood For Making Wack Video Game Movies
New York, NY – O’Shea Jackson Jr. is making it his responsibility for creating video game movies “right.”
During his appearance on The Breakfast Club on Thursday (May 2), the son of Ice Cube revealed a few passion projects he was considering, one being video game movies.
“I gotta be the guy to get video game movies right I feel like there’s a bunch of them that are just cash grabs and that’s disrespectful,” he proclaims.
The 28-year-old star continues, “They’re scared to touch it, but they know it makes money, they know it’s a story behind it, so they just make a movie based off that story, and we just get so short as gamers, and I’m tired of that too.”
According to his perspective, high-profile video game-inspired films such as Tomb Raider and Super Mario Brothers missed the mark. “Alicia Vikander, she’s incredible, and I feel like they did her short, that movie should have been crazy. Super Mario Brothers damn near made Nintendo not want to do movies no more, the only thing they put out was Pokémon,” he declared.
As if his words needed any weight, as he was conducting the interview, fans of the popular video game, Sonic The Hedgehog, sounded off after viewing the trailer for the upcoming live-action film.
The negative feedback was so rampant that director Jeff Fowler fully committed to redesigning the character.
Jackson feels Hollywood is hesitant to spend money on video game movies because they do not value the genre. “You gotta convince them that they should spend X amount of money on it … and if they ain’t got no appreciation for the game they gone be like man …,” he said with a shoulder shrug.
O’shea Jackson Jr is currently acting in the Jonathan Levine-directed comedy Long Shot. He plays as Lance, lead character Fred’s (played by Seth Rogan) best friend. The movie is about a journalist who begins to spend time with his former babysitter who is now running for President of the United States.
