Hip Hop Week In Review: Celebrities Mourn John Singleton's Death

HipHopDX – This week in Hip Hop, John Singleton passed away at the age of 51. Also, Remy Ma went back to jail after allegedly assaulting Love & Hip Hop: New York co-star Brittney Taylor. Lastly, Justin Bieber had a critique for Eminem, then compared Chris Brown to Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur.

Rest In Peace John Singleton

Academy Award-nominated film director John Singleton passed away Monday (April 29), after his family had made the “agonizing” decision to take him off life support. He was 51.

The Snowfall co-creator suffered from a stroke the previous week that put him in a coma while at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

Singleton is the mastermind behind a docket of films that became classic staples in the Hip Hop culture such as Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice, Higher Learning and Baby Boy.

Celebrities such as fellow filmmakers Spike Lee and Jordan Peele as well as recording artists such as RZA and Juicy J paid their respects.

Ice Cube, who starred as “Doughboy” in Boyz N The Hood, also paid tribute to Singleton with a heartfelt Instagram post.

“I was discovered by a master filmmaker by the name of John Singleton,” Cube wrote. “He not only made me a movie star but made me a filmmaker.”

Singleton’s estate is reportedly worth $35 million. Though he left a will, his family is currently in a dispute over how the money will be distributed.

Remy Ma Goes Back To Jail

Remy Ma turned herself into authorities Wednesday (May 1) and was charged with third-degree assault for allegedly punching Love & Hip Hop: New York co-star Brittney Taylor in the face.

NYPD opened an investigation last month following an altercation that occurred at the Pretty Lou Benefit Concert on April 16. Remy allegedly left Taylor with a black eye.

Fat Joe has defended his “All The Way Up” collaborator, claiming Taylor is only after clout.

Justin Bieber Critiques Eminem & Compares Chris Brown to 2Pac

Justin Bieber took to Instagram on Wednesday (May 1) to share his thoughts on Eminem’s Kamikaze track “The Ringer,” where the Detroit rapper is throwing insults at the younger generation of rap stars such as Lil Pump and Lil Xan.

“I just like Em’s flow but don’t like that he’s dissing new rappers. I like the new generation of rap he just doesn’t understand it,” Justin opined.

Next, he compared Chris Brown to Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur.

“Everyone wants to wait til people die To give them the credit they deserve. I’m calling it now when CB passes away after a long full life, you will miss what you had in front of you the whole time,” he captioned on the post.
