Earlier this week a 32-year-old man from Newcastle was charged with common assault and criminal damage after throwing a salted caramel milkshake over Brexit Party leader, Nigel Farage, as he campaigned in the city.

Mr MacNaughton, a widower, is understood to have been born in Canada, but moved to the UK in 1960.

He then joined the Parachute regiment and served with the regiment around the world until 1982.

On leaving the army service he settled with his wife and family in Aldershot, Hampshire, where he was described as a popular member of the local community.

He has published two novels, based on his time in the military called, They Stood in the Door and They Stayed a Soldier.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: "We received a report at 10.06am from a third party about an assault on a man in his 80s at North Lane, Aldershot. We are investigating the incident and are trying to make contact with the victim."
