Cardi B Is a Bernie Bro

During a recent red carpet interview, Cardi B fielded some political questions with Variety. When asked what she would text Donald Trump if given the chance, she simply replied, "I just hate him." But she was much more definitive on which Democrat she liked going into the 2020 presidential campaign: Bernie Sanders. "Imma always be with Bernie," she said, adding, "Bernie don't say things to be cool. There's pictures of him being an activist from a very, very, very long time."

She added that she also liked a speech that Ohio representative and presidential candidate Tim Ryan made, since he stressed the importance of getting the U.S. on a universal health care system.

There's been some mutual admiration between Cardi and Sanders for a while now. She sang FDR's praises to GQ last year, saying "First of all, he helped us get over the Depression, all while he was in a wheelchair. Like, this man was suffering from polio at the time of his presidency, and yet all he was worried about was trying to make America great—make America great again for real. He's the real 'Make America Great Again,' because if it wasn't for him, old people wouldn't even get Social Security."

In response, Sanders put out a video thanking Cardi B for making those comments.

Of course, Cardi B is anything but shy. Last year, she endorsed Cynthia Nixon in the Democratic primary for governor of New York, though there was some speculation that it was one more front in her feud with Micki Minaj, who had thrown her support behind incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

And she also posted a viral Instagram rant about taxes, saying, "Uncle Sam, I want to know what you’re doing with my fucking tax money." It earned praise from the likes of Ben Shapiro, Meghan McCain, and other conservatives, but they seem to have misunderstood what Cardi was saying. She wasn't complaining about paying taxes, she was demanding transparency and accountability about what's done with those taxes. Or as she put it, she's paying the top rate and "there's still rats on the damn trains."

Cardi's latest comments are pretty far from a full on endorsement, but, hey, we're still eight months from the primaries and haven't even seen the candidates debate yet. There's still plenty of time to hound celebrities about who they're backing.
